The seeds of Penumbra’s style and creative process were planted at Fort Lewis College when, in 1999, Alex first experimented with blending audio theatre, live performance and shadow theatre in the production of The Fat Ninja. In 2001, LeAnn, Stacey and Alex collaborated on the massive multidisciplinary theatre project, Don't.  In 2002, they again collaborated to present the "chance play" The Boy and the Rainbow, which provided a further opportunity to experiment with technological innovations and shadow conventions developed through a ritualistic rehearsal process. In 2005, 3 years after graduating from Fort Lewis College, the trio reunited in Durango to form Penumbra Theatre Company.

Penumbra Theatre has produced three original performances Penumbra: A Festival of Shadow and Color (2005), Oblivion (2005), and The Sand Queen's Ceremony (2006).  Two additional shows are currently in development with performances in Durango and Denver scheduled in 2008.
